People Have the Right to Rebel
00:00, February 26, 2008 | Electoral Rights“The state should protect human rights, including the right to free movement, freedom of assembly and association, free speech.
And if all these are not provided by the state, the state is fixed as totalitarian and the person has the right to rebel against totalitarianism and oppressions”-said the coordinator of HCA Vanadzor Arthur Sakunts in the interview with “a1plus.”
In order to justify what he said A. Sakunts referred to the third paragraph of the preface of International Bill of Human Rights”: “Human rights should be protected by the rule of law so that people won’t have to be against totalitarianism and pressure“ and added “today the only way for people is to oppose and rebel. No matter authorities call it seizing the power, they have already done it, no matter the authorities call it violence against constitutional order, they have already done it.” According to him the current regime does not have any ideas except for “failure of force methods” and even they have forgotten the pre-election slogan “Go ahead, Armenia.” Arthur Sakunts also informs that the employees of different structures in Vanadzor will be forced to go to Yerevan for the rally of Serge Sargsyan. He calls everybody not to go under pressure. “But what if they’ll be fired from their job?”-asked ‘a1plus’.
A. Sakunts replied that they can fire one or two, but they cannot fire everyone. Can the citizens of Armenia be sure that Armenian human rights defenders will be able to protect people’s rights? In answer to this question A. Sakunts said:
“Of course” and brought as an example the case that took place on February 21st: “The traffic police without any justification stopped the cars that were taking people to Yerevan for a rally. The citizens called us and we turned to the prosecutor’s office.” And today, according to him, those citizens are ready to go and give testimonies that their right to free movement had been violated.
