Moldova and the Ukraine will sign the EU Association Agreement, in case of Georgia I have concerns, Artur Sakunts
14:26, October 16, 2013 | News | Civil ControlChairman of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Artur Sakunts is sure that the Ukraine and Moldova will sign and will initial the European Union Association Agreement in Vilnius, whereas, in case of Georgia he had certain doubts.
“The Ukrainian government has taken at least two or three official decisions to sign the Association Agreement in Vilnius…A political consensus on the issue have been reached in Moldova as well. But at this point I am more concerned over Georgia and not Moldova, because a political agreement has been reached there as well, despite numerous possible weak points similar to those that Armenia had,” Mr. Sakunts replied in a talk with Tert.am in response to the question that until present it was announced that Moldova and Georgia were ready to initial, while the Ukraine to sign the EU Association Agreement, but there were concerns that at the last moment they would act like Armenia.
By the way, the Russian central channels also express such concerns by mentioning that Viktor Yanukovych who was seeking for Association with the EU now had grounds to review his decision. Right after the European officials demanded from him to release his sworn political opponent Yulia Tymoshenko.
“Officially called Russian Federation, but Putin’s Russia, let us call thing by their names, takes it too painful that his neighboring countries and post-Soviet states can independently take political decisions and orient for another partnership format. Although this does not at all mean that cooperation with Russia should be discontinued. It is absurd especially in the global world. All of the “concerns” of both Russian and Palace experts, which are voiced to cast doubt over the possibility of signing the Association Agreement by the Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, speak more of their desire righter than their opportunities. Moreover, expert of the Russian palace are even concerned that imprisoned Tymoshenko also welcomed the decision of the person (Viktor Yanukovych), who put her in prison, to join the Association Agreement ”, noted the human rights activist.
According to him, Tymoshenko-Yanukovych relations out of the scope of the Association Agreement issues, since these two share political consensus on this issue.
With respect to the concerns regarding Georgia, Mr. Sakunts said: “The Georgian presidential election scheduled for October 27 will precede the Vilnius summit. Mikheil Saakashvili’s term of office is expiring, and I have doubts about Georgia’s intentions.”
Anyway, the human rights activist doesn’t exclude the possibility of drastic changes, but he also records that on the one hand the party of the quitting president has such intentions, while, on the other hand, Ivanishvili has not until present declared his intention on refusing the Association Agreement.
