Armenian National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum Statement On the Detention of Civic Activist Vardges Gaspari
14:45, February 26, 2016 | Announcements, OtherArmenian National Platform of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) Civil Society Forum (CSF) strictly condemns the February 19, 2016 decision of General Jurisdiction Court of Shengavit Administrative District to detain civic activist Vardges Gaspari and the fact of not preventing violent tortures by his cellmates under the connivance of the prison administration of “Nubarashen” penitentiary. The morals and manners characteristic of the penitentiaries of Stalin and Soviet times must be eradicated and must be considered unacceptable for the justice system of independent Armenia.
We join Vardges Gaspari attorneys’ position voiced in their public Statement that “this is a political reprisal against Gaspari for his civic activism and his principles with a view to repressing disobedient citizens and people fighting against injustice, thereby creating an atmosphere of terror for others”.
Armenian National Platform calls on the International Organizations operating in Armenia to raise their voice against continuous violations of the commitments undertaken by the RA Government in the field of human rights protection.
EaP CSF Armenian National Platform demands to immediately release Vardges Gaspari and stop political persecution against him.
