Amnesty as Symbol for “Absence of Justice”
12:47, October 1, 2013 | News | Civil Control, PoliceIn a phone talk with GALA Artur Sakunts, Chairman of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor mentioned that today Serzh Sargsyan’s recommendation to declare amnesty speaks of “the lack of justice system in our country”.
“This means, a person appears in freedom due to forgivingness of a leader, president or the so-called “king” and not as a result of justice administration in the country”, notes Sakunts.
The human rights activist believes that the release of a person in Armenia should not be carried out with the grounds of an acquittal verdict, stopping the case or changing an article, but merely at the president’s discretion.
“This means we don’t have a justice system. However, hereby our authorities intend to show that the judicial system has begun to accurately function”, adds Sakunts.
It is noteworthy that today RA President Serzh Sargsyan submitted his recommendation to declare amnesty with regard to the 22nd anniversary of the RA’s independence to the discussion of the National Assembly. Pursuant to non-official data of Mediamax, the upcoming amnesty will also extend to ANC activist Tigran Arakelyan.
