Lia Misakyan’s death case; questioning of witnesses in progress
13:24, April 28, 2014 | News, Own news | Children's rightsOn April 26, 2014, the Court of General Jurisdiction of Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeytun administrative districts of Yerevan, RA resumed proceedings on the criminal case against Lilit Vardanyan and Zarine Ayvazyan on the death of Lia Misakyan. The summoned witness, Susanna Ispiryan, nurse on duty at the intensive care unit of the Arabkir Medical Center was questioned at the hearing.
According to the witness, on January 1, 2013, she was on duty in Sector 2 of the intensive care unit, wards 8-15. As Lia Misakyan had been under the care of another nurse, Armine Karapetyan, the witness was unable to provide any details on the case. She also stated that the doctor on duty on that day was Zarine Ayvzyan. In answer to the questions of the Prosecutor, S. Ispiryan said that it was impossible not to hear internal calls to the intensive care unit, and there was no call from the laboratory during her stay at the nursing unit on January 1. The witness added that patients usually underwent a blood test upon their admission to hospital.
In answer to the representative of the aggrieved party’s successor, A. Sakunts, nurse S. Ispiryan stated that on the day of her duty she was heavily overloaded since unlike ordinary workdays, on holidays only 2 nurses (one of them works the day shift till 5:00 p.m.) out of 3 were on duty. The witness testified that she had learnt about the child’s death on January 4, despite her following shift was on January 6. The nurse was informed of Lia Misakyan’s death by phone, but she could not remember exactly who had told her the bad news. She also stated that despite the fact that she had asked about the causes of the child’s death, she received no clear answer. The witness testified that she had not taken any blood sample for analysis on January 1, but some analyses had been done on that same day. Artur Sakunts attempted to find out what kind of analyses she meant if she had reportedly taken no blood sample on that day. However, Zarine Ayvazyan’s advocate E. Sargsyan objected to the question. The judge sustained the objection finding that the question had no relevance to the accusation. Meanwhile, Artur Sakunts stated that he had reasonable doubts that the laboratory of ArabkirMedicalCenter had not functioned on holidays.
Zarine Ayvazyan’s advocate E. Sargsyan asked the witness to clarify whether doctors at the medical center were supposed to make other ward rounds along with the morning round. The witness answered that the doctor on duty had to do another 2 compulsory ward rounds throughout the entire unit except the morning round. In reply to the advocate’s next question, S. Ispiryan stated that Zarine Ayvazyan had completed another 2 ward rounds during her day on duty.
Since the last summoned witness on the case, the nurse on duty at the intensive care unit of the Arabkir Medical Center, Armine Karapetyan, was absent from the court hearing on a reasonable excuse, the examination of the case was postponed till April 30, 12:00 p.m. Upon questioning the witnesses, the court will proceed to investigating expert opinions enclosed to the case and questioning the experts.
