December 9 is the International Day of Human Rights Defenders, which was marked by UN Declaration of human rights defenders in 1998.

According to the UN Declaration of Human Rights Defenders, right defenders are those entities who defend human rights individually or jointly. Such groups include and are not limited to NGOs, activists, lawyers, attorneys, informants about abuse of rights and journalists.
