Statement of Human rights Activists
00:00, August 11, 2011 | Announcements | Right to be free from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment | PoliceIn the evening of August 9, 2011, 7 young HAK (Armenian National Congress) activists were brought to Kentron Police Department of Yerevan from the area adjacent to “Swan” Lake, among them Sahak Muradyan, Areg Gevorgyan, Artak Karapetyan, Tigran Arakelyan, Davit Kiramijyan, Vahagn Gevorgyan and Sargis Gevorgyan. Today, on August 10, a criminal case turned out to have been filed against them.
The Police officials applied force and caused physical injuries to the young activists as a result of brutal beating after and before bringing them to Police Department. Violations were even exerted against one of the advocates of ANC activists inside the Police Department building.
As a result of the falsified elections, the fractions, having appropriated the Government, have in fact changed the State into police-centered Government. The law is not being applied. Nobody is protected. And those, who wish to protect their rights, or moreover, the rights of others, become a target. This is why these young activists are so often exposed to violations, are being arrested or detained.
We, the representatives of human rights organizations, condemn the acts of violation exerted against the 7 ANC activists and the attempts of fake criminal prosecution initiated against them. We claim that they immediately release the detainees and punish the perpetrators of violations and initiators of the criminal prosecution as a result of impartial investigation.
