Discussion in Spitak
00:00, August 19, 2010 | Press ReleaseOn August 19, 2010 Spitak Helsinki Group organized a discussion on the activities implemented within the framework of the project “Public Awareness Raising on the Activity of the Local Self-governmental Bodies in Spitak.”
Artur Sakunts, the coordinator of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly – Vanadzor, as well asthe employees of the Human Rights Center after A. D. Sakharov, representatives of local governmental bodies, teachers, and students were present at the discussion.
During the discussion the below mentioned objectives of the three-month-project were presented by the coordinator of the project Ashkhen Babayan:
-to familiarize the population of Spitak with the law “On Local Self-government”
-to reveal the citizens’ attitude towards the activity of the Local Self-governmental Bodies and the reasons of their passiveness,
-to form dialogue between the population and the Local Self-governmental Bodies.
A. Babayan mentioned that during the implementation of the project the population was provided with free legal consultation on issues related to the activity of the Local Self-governmental Bodies. Survey was made to find out how much the population of Spitak was aware and what their attitude was towards the activity of the Local Self-governmental Bodies.
Two seminar-discussions were organized aiming to inform the population more effectively and forming dialogue between the population and the Local Self-governmental Bodies. A leaflet on the rights and duties of the community head, avagani, and citizens was published and disseminated. A radio program related to“Local Self-government” was held on local radio station.
The three-month project “Public Awareness Raising on the Activity of the Local Self-governmental Bodies in Spitak” was financed by the grant provided by Human Rights Armenian Center after A. D. Sakharov.
It is worth mentioning that the human rights NGO – “Spitak Helsinki Group” was founded in 2010 within the framework of the project on “Capacity Building of HCA Vanadzor in Human Rights Sphere”, which is implemented with the joint funding of the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation – Armenia and the Government of the Netherlands.
