Training on effective medico-legal documentation of torture and ill-treatment
17:28, March 7, 2015 | News, Own newsOn 18-22 December 2014, Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor organized a training session on effective medico-legal documentation of torture and ill-treatment in cooperation with IRCT (The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims), OSF-Armenia (The Open Society Foundations – Armenia) and HRHT (Human Rights House Tbilisi), with the support of Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands to Armenia.
The five-day workshop aimed at strengthening the capacities of Armenian NGOs, health and legal specialists and psychologists in the area of medical and legal documentation of cases of victims of torture and ill-treatment through the introduction of the Istanbul Protocol, which defines internationally recognized standards for torture documentation and investigation. Participants were familiarized with the provisions of the protocol, which provide comprehensive, practical guidelines for the assessment of persons who suffered torture and ill treatment, for investigating cases of alleged torture, and for reporting the findings to the relevant authorities.
The training was conducted by such a group of professionals and experienced trainers as the director of GCRT Lela Tsiskarishvili, the head of the rehabilitation unit at RESTART Sana Hamzeh, and an expert from the Independent Forensic Expert Group, Rusudan Beriashvili.
30 lawyers, doctors and psychologists from all over the country participated in the training session.
