“Is Armenian Church concerned by the RA’s future in the Customs Union? The deep silence of the Armenian Apostolic Church, acting on behalf of the Armenian nation and Armenian statehood, is at least strange to me”, Chairman of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Artur Sakunts told GALA. In his opinion, it is the Armenian Apostolic Church which has ground s to express its disposition regarding RA’s future in the composition of the CU.

“Throughout our history in the 20^th century during the rule of Tsardom of Russia Tsar’s Vicar started the confiscation of the Apostolic Church’s property and the nationalization process. Total oversight over the Apostolic Church was wide-spread during the years of Soviet power. I believe that the Armenian Apostolic Church does not have any grounds to welcome Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union, the owner or spine of which is Russia. It turns out that in case of the major danger directed against the church, which was evident from our history, the Armenian Apostolic Church fails to express any disposition. Maybe they are considering getting adapted to every new setting. Be it a Sultan, a Tsar or Putin… they can always find ways to get adapted.”

By Sakunts’ words, the silence of the nationalists over this issue is also strange, who, according to the human rights activists, stop thinking of national interests where their individual interests stem.

“Thus, it can also be recorded that the policy of wearing a colorful dressing gown is replaced from Hrachya Harutyunyan to Serzh Sargsyan, political elite and the whole Republic of Armenia.  Whereas, failure to address this shameful situation means that the elite automatically agrees with the colorful dressing gown advocating its being in fashion. This is merely conditioned by solving the issue of their feeding. Whereas, this is merely a state treason and everyone is part of the treason. If you do not have anything to say and keep silent, it means you al give your consent and partake in the process”.

Sakunts also addressed the recently published sociological surveys, according to them, 70-80% of the RA citizens were for the RA membership to the Customs Union.

“I consider them as obviously false. Through ordered surveys an attempt is made to legitimize that disgraceful process. In fact the majority of the RA citizens, who are aware and understand, are against, while the rest should be notified.

They forget that human dignity is for all and for all times. While, slavery is not natural irrespective of a person’s title, being it a Minister, President, General or an oligarch.
