Sakunts: “Kostanyan was not ready; that’s why he resigned”
23:21, August 4, 2016 | AnnouncementsProsecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan’s resignation means that this system can no longer “digest” the volume of current challenges. Human rights activist Artur Sakunts made such an observation in his interview to Lragir.am.
“This means that the authorities, represented by the law enforcement agencies, are no longer able to solve the challenges by their practices and methods applied so far”, Sakunts said.
He notes that there is no hope that the dismissals in the law enforcement system of these days are aimed at real changes in the system. “These are induced changes; the system can no longer stand the pressure rather than the changes are initiated by Serzh Sargsyan”, he said.
According to the human rights activist, Serzh Sargsyan needs more hardened and crude staff to fulfill his requirements under the logic of his notorious speech of August 1. “And, of course, certain tough practices and pressures should be expected, I’ll repeat, through the staff fulfilling political rather than professional orders”, he said.
When asked on the relevance of Gevorg Kostanyan’s resignation with the actions of law enforcement agencies against ‘Sasna Tsrer’ group members, Sakunts answered that imposition of sentences does not depend on Kostanyan after all.
“But is the Prosecutor General ready to assume such a responsibility? This is a different question. In this case, I can see that Kostanyan was not ready to assume such a responsibility and therefore resigned”, the human rights activist emphasized.
