Azerbaijan targets to destroy both Artsakh and RA: Sakunts
00:10, August 11, 2018 | News, Other newsDuring the last few days human rights activist Artur Sakunts’ interview of 2001 was actively circulated in the internet, where speaking about the regulation of Karabakh conflict, he states that compromises are necessary and that some of the occupied lands should be returned to Azerbaijan. Regarding the aforementioned subject Politik.am talked with human rights activist Artur Sakunts, Head of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor, who pointed out that it was the subsequent campaign against him and the revolution.
“In my interview of 2001 I made such a statement since back then there was still a chance to dialogue with the Azerbaijani authorities, the negotiations were going intensively, moreover, there was a chance to resolve the issue of independence of Artsakh by concluding a political contract. Back in those years, contacts were still maintained at the civil society level. Today’s situation is the outcome of the disposition of Azerbaijani authorities in several years, the gradually increasing harshness of approaches, aggressiveness against Nagorno-Karabakh and the Republic of Armenia, as well as stimulation of hatred against Armenians on the national level. At this point, no negotiations are held, since Azerbaijan has been continually carrying out military encroachments to disrupt the security of Artsakh indicating they are not ready for either compromises or negotiations”, stated Artur Sakunts adding that currently, the situation has drastically changed, and there is no point in discussing any compromises.
Sakunts also highlighted that in the recent years, certain events have been happening, which could not have happened before: with April war of 2016 an encroachment was exerted against the security of Nagorno-Karabakh people, and now the Azerbaijani authorities openly carry out encroachments against the Republic of Armenia.
“Currently compromises and dialogues are out of the question since Azerbaijan targets to destroy both Artsakh and the RA. Negotiations should be given a fresh start and re-commenced, however, there should come a time for the political status, the recognition of independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh, the republic of Artsakh, to be obtained through compromises. The regulation of the conflict without compromises is impossible and the one who claims the opposite either is engaged in deception or obviously doesn’t possess knowledge on the logic of conflict resolution. But I must repeat myself that compromises may be considered only if the other conflicting party refrains from its aggressive policy, as well as life and security threatening actions. As long as those threats exist, compromises cannot be incorporated into the agenda. On the other hand, no conflicts can be resolved through the use of force, there can be no solution since it will have a temporary nature. The issues related to the neutralization of the external threats to the security can and must only be resolved through the use of force”, stated Artur Sakunts.
Summarizing the interview, Artur Sakunts unveiled why and who disseminated his interview given in 2011, where he expressed his standpoint in line with the context of that period, but currently inapplicable, a cut-off from his statement, given that a situation has changed, which therefore has entailed a change in the approaches on the conflict resolution by stating, “All of this is being done to divert public attention from major important issues on the current agenda. Now a large-scale struggle against corruption and towards establishing a legitimate and sovereign state is underway in our country, for the absence of which the former authorities bear the whole responsibility. I am absolutely convinced that the previous authorities have had connection in the escalation against me.”
