Sakunts is Denied Entry to the Detention Facility
00:00, April 19, 2011 | News | Detention Facilities, Political PrisonersHuman Rights Activist, Artur Sakunts, head of the Public Monitoring Group at Detention Facilities is currently denied entry to “Artik” penitentiary.
The authorities at the penitentiary claim that they are encountering problems using the card system; however, they don’t explain why it impedes access of human rights activist into the facilities. The law authorizes each member of the Public Monitoring Group to visit any of the RA detention facilities at any time. But the reality is that the activities of the Public Monitoring Group are restricted.
Nevertheless, Artur Sakunts informed us in a phone conversation that he won’t leave the Artik Penitentiary until he carries out his functions mandated by the PMMs. As of this writing, journalists are on their way to the Penitentiary.
It should be noted that the editor-in-chief of “Haykakan Zhamanak” daily Nikol Pashinyan is detained in this penitentiary.
