Take a step against the establishment of authoritarian governance: The statement of 36 organizations and individuals
19:55, April 21, 2018 | Announcements, JointThe constitutional amendments were imposed by the referendum of December 2015 through large-scale organized fraud, massive restrictions and infringements on the free will and rights of voters, widespread electoral bribery and continuous abuse of administrative resources. Obtaining a majority in the National Assembly that was formed through the same methods in April 2017, the Republican Party of Armenia seized power, and on April 17, 2018 Serzh Sargsyan decided to rule the country for the third consecutive time.
During his tenure as President of the RA over the last ten years, more than 350,000 people have permanently emigrated from the Republic of Armenia, around 30% of the population has remained poor, human rights violations, political persecution and imprisonment have been of a continuous nature, and systemic corruption has remained the main mechanism of governance. As a result of the latter, over a hundred youths perished during the hostilities of April 2016.
The principle of impunity prevails in the Republic of Armenia instead of that of the rule of law.
Guided by the conviction that citizens, exercising the power that constitutionally belongs to them, have the right to stand against non-democratic processes at any time, we express our support for the civil disobedience movement and protest actions taking place in Yerevan and other cities of the Republic of Armenia these days.
We, the undersigned non-governmental organizations and actors, hold that it is inadmissible for Serzh Sargsyan to assume the office of Prime Minister and to take over the governance of the state for the third time in a row.
