Visit to Lori Region
00:00, September 11, 2007 | Civil Control, PoliceOn September 5th of this year the working group established by the Human Rights Defender of Armenia visited Lori region to clarify information received from HCA Vanadzor on the murder of Lori region prosecutor.
The working group met with a number of human rights organizations and with A. Ayvazyan, deputy head of Vanadzor department of Lori Regional Division of RA Police. The working group studied the records on people who had been brought into the police station. The investigation revealed that approximately 40 people had been brought in for questioning on the case of the murder. The records indicated when each person was brought in and when they were released. No cases of violations of judicial norms were recorded during the time when the representatives of the human rights defender were in the police station.
Though during that time they did not find any violation, the representative of HCA Vanadzor assured that the atmosphere was still tense regarding human rights violations by the law-enforcement agencies involved in this case.
Taking the abovementioned into account, Human Rights Defender of Armenia calls all law enforcement bodies to undertake all possible measures
• To identify the murderers
• To verify information on possible violations committed by police employees and, if a violation is found, to call the trespasser(s) to responsibility
• To follow the demands made by the Criminal Procedural Legislation in order to prevent the occurrence of cases of violation of human rights or fundamental freedoms
