“CARICATURES”
00:00, February 1, 2007 | Press ReleaseOn January 31, 2007 the presentation of the booklet of caricatures by Artak Ohanyan, caricaturist of the newspaper “Civil Initiative,” took place in Vanadzor. The cartoons are about the situation in Armenia, electoral processes, judicial system, the police and the army, the freedom of media.
As A. Ohanyan mentioned, the caricatures criticize not the person but the actions he performed.
“Making caricatures is like walking on a rope, a bit left, a bit right and you can fall down,”-this was an opinion expressed by Sukias Torosyan, the head of the Association of Armenian Caricaturists. According to caricaturist Pavel Jangirov, Artak Ohanyan’s caricatures are in line with all the rules. “We don’t mind if our association has a new member like A. Ohanyan”-he added.
The first issue of “Civil Initiative” was printed on March 21, 2002. It was initiated with the aim of filling the gap in the field of media directed towards human rights.
“It was at that time that it occurred to me to have an artist for the newspaper, who could express the essence of the situation. Pictures can sometimes tell more. A friend of mine introduced Artak Ohanyan to me. Since then our cooperation has started”-presented Arthur Sakunts, the coordinator of HCA Vanadzor.
The book was printed by Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly-Vanadzor, with support from Interchurch Peace Council (IKV, the Netherlands) and Interchurch Organization for Development Cooperation (ICCO, the Netherlands).
