SOS Escalation of Human Rights Violations in Armenia; Their Prevention is in Your Hands… To Human Rights Organizations
00:00, February 29, 2008 | Electoral RightsAfter elections in Armenia violence and intimidation by state officials and power structures still take place. RA Police and National Security Service adopted the Soviet KGB methods and they organize repressions against citizens.
“Unknown” rascals joined the employees of police and special services whose willfulness and violence is of massive character, who take the advantage of the guarantee of going unpunished.
Even in the polling stations, police stations the citizens and their advocates, NGO representatives and even members of Parliament are beaten. The work of journalists is hindered. One cannot even count the number of violence, it is everywhere. In post election Armenia, where elections “are mostly in line with international standards,” currently there are 16 political prisoners. In this situation the citizen remains unprotected against violence because in permissive atmosphere in the country it is the policemen that perform violence. With different invented reasons for detaining political leaders, beating members of Parliament supporting citizens, and intimidating make protection of human rights and protection against physical tortures impossible. The state repressive system justifies its organized violence with the positive assessment of international organizations and disseminates it through media outlets controlled by it providing with this only information of authorities.
Being the only TV that broadcasts in the whole country and abroad, Public TV misinforms society.
After the visit of the representatives of European structures, the statement of Robert Kocharyan on “creating order in the country” made on February 26, 2008, became an instruction for police and National Security Service to perform violence and illegal actions against citizens. Very few resources that protect human rights in Armenia need your help and support.
We call you to turn to the authorities of your country asking to intervene in the situation of human rights. Make your voice heard through all possible means. Let us not allow to hold massive violence and let’s react not when all cases become numbers and all violations, illegalities and tortures become facts.
