The Court Trial of Nazaryan’s case has been cancelled
00:00, September 6, 2011 | News | Right to Fair Trial, Rights of Soldiers/Recruits | Armed ForcesThe court trial of 30-year-old officer, Artak Nazaryan, who died in the Military, in June 2010, was delayed one again on Monday at the RA Tavoush Region Court of Common Jurisdiction because the defendant was late.
At first, the trial was postponed from 14:00 pm to 16:30 pm. Later the secretary informed the judge that the guards accompanying the defendants from Yerevan called to notify that they left Yerevan at 13:30 pm. Before the defendants could make their way to the Court, the working day was over and the court trial was again cancelled.
“The court trial is being cancelled. This disorder should be eliminated. It is unacceptable that people should arrive after such a distance, but the fact is, the defendants were not here to attend the trial in time”, declared Judge Samvel Mardanyan.
Such progression of events was disapproved of by the aggrieved party. “It is clearly done with intention”, related Tsovinar Nazaryan, the sister of Artak Nazaryan, in an interview with “Azatutyun” Radio Station. “I think this cannot be accidental. The Penitentiary Administration is well aware what time the trial is due to begin and how long it takes to get to Berd from Yerevan.”
Manush Kirakosyan, mother of Harutik Kirakosyan, accused in the case of Nazaryan, claims a fair trial. After 6-months in custody, the measure of restraint against the soldier was changed and Harutik Kirakosyan is currently under the direct control of the military unit commanding staff. The parents of the accused soldiers brought the letter from Artur Mkrtchyan with them, who served with their sons, where he denied the testimony given during the preliminary investigation explaining he could not remember what he had written as he was forced to write because he was tortured.”
It should be noted that Nazaryan died in one of the military units of Tavoush region as a result of gunshot wound last summer. The investigators with the case have brought up a version of a suicide. The platoon Commander, the Deputy Commander of the battalion and three term soldiers, allegedly abetted Nazaryan to commit suicide. They have been arrested.
