During the discussion of EU-Armenia Association Agreement Artur Sakunts, Chairman of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor, had the impression that the EU had made an offer to us and we don’t know what to do now.
He raised a question whether we wanted to stay in the rows of the so-called Eurasian civilization or wanted to be integrated into European civilization. By his words, this has been a key issue for Russia and Europe. He noted that all of the participants assessed the situation of Armenia as tragic, moreover, a challenge like migration already serves as the first risk for the national security and statehood. Now, according to him, we must see which one offers best chances in terms of our issues. Russian Federation has always offered us a submissive mechanism, it creates chances to be subject, enter the circle of its military security and serve. Whereas, according to him, European Union offers greater chances for the solution of the issues. European civilization has created greater chances for the solution of our issues.
“It is a psychological challenge for us whether we dare to overcome this situation or it is convenient to grow in the swamp? The military base of Russia doesn’t resolve the issue of Armenia’s security, it solves only Russia’s national security issues.
S. Sakunts spoke of the project’s crucial safeguards: if until now EU offered projects that were supporting only the Government, according to him, this project is multilayer and various strata of the society partake in this project.
