Sword of Damocles hanging over independence: opinions on a new USSR
05:44, February 5, 2014 | News, Other news“A sword of Damocles is hanging over Armenia in a very “luminous” visible spot and in order to see it one does not have to be an analyst or political scientist”, Anahit Bakhshyan, a Board member of “Heritage” party, told Tert.am by addressing the statement of Andrey Sorokin, executive director of news-analytic group “Odnako” operating under Russian “Channel One”, made in the context of the CU and Eurasian Union, whereby, “currently a remodeled and improved version of Soviet Union is being created and everything possible is being done not to repeat former mistakes”.
“It has been seen for a long time. But I believed that our authorities, irrespective of being materialistic, would not be able to ignore such a value as our independent statehood. However, what’s going on in our country now has aroused my deep concern – we have no right to hope for our authorities’ foreign policy. They will sell our independence. It should not be stated by Sorokin to make us understand….that sword of Damocles, which is hanging over our country, is in such a “luminous”, visible spot , which deeply concerns me and others”, Bakhshyan said.
It is noteworthy that an interview with the Armenian-based Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Times) newspaper, the Russian TV presenter Andrey Sorokin said that Russian President Vladimir Putin “has a historic mission to re-establish the USSR.”
In a talk with Tert.am Tigran Khzmalyan, Armenian Pre-parliament member, commented on Sorokin’s statement, saying:
“I would like to recall a truism: history repeats itself – the first time it is a tragedy, and the second it is a farce. Because the Soviet Union, with all its bloodshed and cruelty, was still based on an idea – equality, fraternity, communism. On the other hand, the Customs Union is being based on money, tax, customs fee, that is exchange currency. How can we compare the symbol of the term ‘soviet’ with the idea of ‘customs’? The money the customs officers of the Customs Union are hoarding is US dollars,” Khzmalyan said.
Thus, according to the filmmaker, the Customs union is initially condemned and Armenia will maintain its state independence irrespective of the predications of “such nonentities”.
Chairman of the Helsinki Citizens Assembly Vanadzor Artur Sakunts told Tert.am that Russia’s task is President Putin’s mission to re-establish the USSR and tsarist regimes in Russia, but Armenia’s task is to view such statements as a challenge to Armenia.
“It is certainly a challenge. Moreover, a challenge is what is called the Customs Union and the Eurasian Union. They are the mechanisms Putin is employing to implement his imperial policy,” Sakunts said.
In this context Sakunts noted that Armenia’s political forces, particularly those presented iin the National Assembly, are the first to bear responsibility for the challenges. But if they are inactive, society will unwillingly serve as bearers of the challenges.
