On June 25, 2016, on the day of Roman Pope’s visit, the RA Police literally abducted Shahen Harutyunyan, the son of political prisoner Shant Harutyunyan.
Shahen had left for Gyumri to meet the Pope and if possible, to hand him the text of the Statement on political prisoners in Armenia, aiming to focus his attention to the issue of political prisoners in the RA.
The RA police officials, who were dressed as civilians, forced Shahen Harutyunyan into a police car and removed him from Gyumri and transported to Yerevan, by exceeding the scope of their powers and breaching every norm.
Breaching the law, the RA Police acted as an organized bandit group and abducted the RA citizen in the daytime restricting the latter’s right to freedom of expression.
Subsequently, the RA Police acts as a unit pursuing hooligan goals and committing a grave crime against an individual by breaching and restricting human right.
We demand that the RA General Proscutor’s Office, the RA NSS and the RA SIS immediately
– Undertake measures to free Shahen Harutyunyan from Police abduction,
– Initiate a criminal case against the RA Police Chief V. Gasparyan and other perpetrating officials,
– And ensure the reinstatement of Shahen Harutyunyan’s right to freedom of expression and its exercising in the manner of his preference.
Please, find attached the crime report on the incident submitted by HCA Vanadzor.
