Investigator insists that Mkhitar Sargsyan committed a suicide
16:14, September 7, 2016 | News, Own news | Detention FacilitiesHCA Vanadzor protects the rights of the successor of Mkhitar Sargsyan who died in custody in March.
Mkhitar Sargsyan was sentenced for 1 month and 3 days on charges of beating a 12-year-old child; the detention period was to expire a few days after the incident.
His family consider the official version of suicide incredible. His wife, Satenik Hovsepyan, insists that her husband was murdered referring to their conversations, according to which they tried to make M. Sargsyan confess a crime he had never committed (note: torturing his cellmate Vardges Gaspari was also attributed to the latter and he was frequently questioned in the period before the incident).
To find out the circumstances of the suicide, lawyer Tatevik Siradeghyan, representative of Yerevan Office of HCA Vanadzor and representative of the victim’s successor, submitted a motion to the investigative agency to obtain information on carrying out an investigative experiment and questionings of Mkhitar Sargsyan under the investigation into the incident on using violence against Vardges Gaspari.
However, the latter dismissed the motion on the pretext of being groundless. Particularly, the decision mentions that the necessary investigative actions have already been carried out and their results showed that M. Sargsyan committed a suicide.
The criminal case on causing Mkhitar Sargsyan to commit a suicide was later suspended based on the fact that the person to be involved in the case as an accused was not identified. At this moment, the proceedings of the case are still suspended.
The affected party plans to appeal the decision on suspending the criminal proceedings.
