“If Hayrikyan made Such a Decision, it means he is in his Common Sense”
13:53, February 8, 2013 | News | Electoral Rights“I don’t think they could have exerted pressure against Paruyr Hayrikyan, it is another matter how Hayrikyan estimates the situation and how adequate he finds applying his right. If Hayrikyan has made such a decision, it means he is in his common sense and is fully conscious of his actions. And there is no ground to think that he either reached such a decision due to pressures, or doesn’t assess his actions adequately”, told human rights protagonist Artur Sakunts, Chairman of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor in an interview with 168.am.
It should be noted that on February 5 RA presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan, who had been shot on January 31, issued a statement that he was not going apply to the Constitutional Court with a claim to reschedule the election for two weeks later. Immediately after this statement there were comments as if Paruyr Hayrikyan concluded a deal with the authorities or didn’t take measures out of fear.
We asked Artur Sakunts to explain if Paruyr Hayrikyan’s right is violated in case he does not apply to the Constitutional Court with a claim to reschedule the elections. Sakunts stressed that Paruyr Hayrikyan is entitled to decide if there is a compelling impediment or not and if the candidate has made such decision, he doesn’t violate any law. According to Sakunts, political powers are attempting to take advantage of Hayrikyan’s decision based on their interests.
“Each political power provides estimates adjust Hayrikyan’s decision with its goals by pursuing its own interests. However, I am sorry to say, let them use their own resources and not the assassination attempt against Hayrikyan to achieve their set goals. I consider it immoral”, noted the human rights activist. The approach that everyone has already forgotten about the assassination attempt, its triggers and goals made Sakunts indignant and now they change the turn of events by voicing about Hayrikyan choice not to claim to the Constitutional Court.
