The conscript serviceman who sustained a fatal gunshot wound on the head was from Vanadzor

On April 21, 2016, at about 7 am, Spartak Kalashyan, private conscript soldier of the Defense Army, born in 1997, sustained a fatal gunshot wound at the combat position of Martuni military unit N due to the breach of rules of gun handling by a fellow serviceman, as stated by the data of preliminary investigation. The incident was officially communicated no sooner than on April 22.
Deceased 19-year-old Spartak was from Vanadzor; he was drafted into the army in summer of 2015. Previously, before conscription, he had been granted deferment due to some health problems and started his military service at the next call-up.
During the visit of HCA Vanadzor staff members, the serviceman’s family knew no details of the incident and possessed no official information.
On April 22, in the evening, HCA Vanadzor staff members talked to a neighbor and classmate of S. Kalashyan. According to him, the serviceman had never complained of his service. His father was a member of Yerkrapah Voluntary Detachment and often visited him at the military unit. During the days of the April hostilities, he had as well left for the front with the voluntary detachment to meet his son and had just returned a few days before. S. Kalashyan’s classmate noted that his fellow serviceman from Vanadzor, who was the first to inform them about his death, said that one of their fellow servicemen fired at him unintentionally while cleaning the gun.
Later, the 1st Garrison Investigation Division of the General Military Investigative Department of the RA Investigative Committee initiated criminal proceedings under the incident. According to data of the preliminary investigation, on April 21, 2016, at about 7 am, private conscript soldier H. Bareyan on the combat position of the military unit N breached the rules of handling of gun while cleaning the assault rifle assigned to him and fired a shot; as a result, conscript private soldier Spartak Kalashyan sustained a fatal gunshot wound in the head.
The preliminary investigation within the criminal proceedings is in progress.
