Artur Sakunts talks about Triggers of Convict’s Suicide Attempt
13:31, January 24, 2013 | News | Right to Life | Detention FacilitiesSeveral days ago Armenian National Congress activist, political prisoner Tigran Arakelyan warned about the possibility of committing a suicide by a 20-year old young man. In a letter addressed to the Human Rights Defender, the activist set a request to keep his 20-year old cell mate in center of attention, as he had attempted a suicide the previous day.
The Human Rights Defender responded to Tigran Arakelyan’s letter. The HRD quick response group members visited “Nubarashen” Penitentiary, but for some reasons, Serob Mkhitaryan, who had attempted a suicide, refused to meet with the members.
It should be noted this was already the second time Serob had made a suicide attempt. As lurer.com reports Artur Sakunts, Chairman of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor, has also visited Serob Mkhitaryan. The latter asserted the authenticity of information in an interview with us and stated that their primary goal was to understand why Serob Mkhitaryan, who was being kept in the penitentiary, had twice attempted a suicide. “It is significant to reveal the triggers for the suicide attempt. Thank God the attempt was prevented by his cell mates, his life was saved, however, it is essential to find out the reason. Undoubtedly, the issues regarding the criminal case are the reasons. Based on the initial study, I can insist that such reasons could have led Serob into this mental state. We’ll enroll Defense attorneys in the criminal case to settle the latter’s defense issue. I cannot mention additional details, but I must note that Serob Mkhitaryan seems to have given up despair. Of course, we do not guarantee that all issues will be tackled, but we’ll certainly get involved with this case. However, the protection of his rights also depends on him. I mean, he must himself be able to cooperate with us”, noted Artur Sakunts.
