Why did the police need Arman?
00:00, September 27, 2011 | News | Right to be free from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment | PoliceThe case of a rape that occurred in Alaverdi on September 4, 2011 shocked everyone. 82-year-old Roza Mosinyan told police that a young man broke into her house, beat her up, robbed, and raped her.
Later that day, the Police apprehended 21-year-old Arman Ramazyan and he pleaded guilty; however, the victim did not recognize the young man at the confrontation. Afterwards, the police were forced to change the measure of restraint, despite the confession. Rumors started circulating that the Police tried to set up Arman who had previous arrests and was a socially vulnerable person.
Artur Sakunts, Head of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor met with Arman, Arman’s mother and the victim, Roza. According to A. Sakunts, Roza, an 82 year old grandmother, described the suspect as having a round face, short to average in height with broad shoulders, black hair, and black eyes.
However, Arman’s physical features are radically different: his height is above average and he is fair-haired with light-colored eyes. Sakunts said that although Arman talked with him, he appeared fearful during the conversation, which one might assume came from the violence exerted upon him at the police station.
Replying to the human rights activist’s question as to whether he was beaten at the police station, Arman said: ‘For God’s sake, I am not saying anything’.
And as to the question as to “why the police arrested him? ‘Well, they didn’t have anything else to do’. Arman indicated that the police had taken all the necessary samples for the investigation, and states, ‘I am sure 99% of them will not be mine.’
