The Appeals over Khalafyan’s Death were Declined
00:00, June 15, 2011 | Press Release | Right to Fair Trial, Right to Life | PoliceOn Wednesday the Court of Criminal Appeals reached a resolution to reject the April 13, 2010 appeals over Vahan Khalafyan’s death at Charentsavan Police Department.
All the parties over this case had brought up complaints. The Court also made a decision to apply the general amnesty granted on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of RA Independence upon the main defendant of the case, former head of Criminal Investigation Department of Charentsavan Police Division Ashot Harutyunyan, by reducing his remaining sentence by one third.
The court also applied the amnesty towards Charentsavan police officer Mores Hayrapetyan, releasing him from imprisonment. With November 29, 2010 resolution, taken by the Kotayk Region Court of First Instance, Harutyunyan was sentenced to 8 years’ imprisonment, while Hayrapetyan was convicted to 2 years’ imprisonment on probation.
Ashot Harutyunyan was charged with the gravest crime over this case, according to the official version, Vahan Khalafyan committed a suicide as a result of pressure exerted by the police official.
