“Which is the standard for Changes?”
06:48, April 18, 2013 | News | PoliceHuman rights defender and Chairman of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Artur Sakunts was taken aback by the latest staff appointments of RA Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan In an interview with irates.am, he noted that not only appointing Ashot Karapetyan, who tortured oppositional activist Grisha Virabyan years ago, in the position of Chief of Yerevan Police, but also appointing Sargis Martirosyan in the post of Chief of Yerevan Central Department of the RA Police was strange to him. Artur Sakunts stated that today a criminal case was lodged in relation to Sargis Martirosyan subordinates, 2 police officials. It means he hasn’t conducted decent oversight. The human rights activist points out another fact of appointment: Samvel Tonoyan took the post of Charentsavan Police Chief, who was a former police official on operative cases, whose name was mentioned in the criminal case over Vahan Khalafyan, brutally murdered 3 years ago.
“All this is beyond my understanding, since those officials didn’t commit a common misdemeanor, but criminal cases are involved. If changing the attitude towards citizens is not set as a goal, then which is the standard for those changes, is it personal dedication or charm? In this case, a question arises how much the Police serve its citizens”, Artur Sakunts expresses his doubts.
Artur Sakunts thinks that no proper justification has been presented to the public why former Yerevan’s Police Chief Nersik Nazaryan was sacked.
He also stated that the NGOs should work on creating public opinion not to have such decisions taken in our country.
