The court declined the appeal on Shant Harutyunyan’s detention
07:03, January 25, 2014 | News, Other news | Political PrisonersNot long ago the Court of Criminal Appeals declined the appeal of “Tseghakron” party leader Shant Harutyunyan’s advocate Inesa Petrosyan to put off her defendant’s preventive measure for two months against the decision of “Kentron” Court.
Petrosyan told that the investigator had not submitted any grounded reason for keeping Harutyunyan in custody. He only mentioned that the latter could hinder the preliminary investigation.
“Shant Harutyunyan has permanent place of residence, and naturally there are no grounds”, said Inesa Petrosyan. Besides, the investigator mentioned that Harutyunyan could have impact on witnesses involved over the case.
“Whereas, the witnesses over the case are police officers, this is merely a standard definition and nothing more. It is not substantiated any way, no material has been presented how he could have impact on those witnessed”, stated Petrosyan.
The advocate submitted facts to the Court whereby there were no grounded doubts that Shant Harutyunyan had any connection with the criminal act ascribed to him. It should be noted that charges were brought against Harutyunyan for exerting violence against a police officer on November 5 in civilian uniform in case he could not anyhow know the person was a police officer.
The advocate recalled about the other 13 people over the same case, who were also in custody and expressed her conviction that the reason for the same attitude towards both Shant and the others was political. It should be noted that Shant Harutyunyan, who held a protest action with his followers in Liberty square on November 5, declared about his intention to carry out a reform and attempted moving towards the Presidential Palace. However, a clash took place between the protesters and the Police officials as a result of which 38 people were arrested, 14 out of them were charged under Part 2, Article 316 of the RA Criminal Code.
