06:07, November 21, 2013 | News, Other news | Right to be free from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment, Right to Fair Trial, Right to liberty and security | Police, Political PrisonersIn a talk with Araratnews.am human rights activist Artur Sakunts addressed the ruling of the court, whereby, the motion of the trial conducting body should be satisfied and Shant Harutyunyan should be subjected to a forensic medical examination.
Artur Sakunts believes that Shant Harutyunyan does not have mental health issues, “I find taking such a decision as the continuation of political persecution and in fact the court displayed a perfunctory approach. The problem is that Shant does not pay any attention to legal procedures and one can understand why. Expecting justice in a country, where people can be convicted to imprisonment for political views, one cannot naturally have any expectations, although we have hardly convinced Shant to at least demand an advocate”, mentioned the human rights activist. According to Sakunts, the decision of the court, whereby, Shant Harutyunyan should be subjected to a forensic medical examination, must be appealed.
Artur Sakunts believes that through such measures the authorities are attempting to cut off Shant Harutyunyan from the context based on his views and actions, the situation in which Armenia is today and which instigated Shant Harutyunyan to show his protest in that manner, “It was a protest action, which did not at all contain any illegal action, everything was a provocation and instead of investigating into the lawfulness of the police actions and filing criminal cases against the Police Chief and his accompanying officials, they carry out political persecution against Shant Harutyunyan”, stated Artur Sakunts.
The latter noted that he shared the viewpoint that Shant Harutyunyan is a political prisoner. To the question what progress and conclusion the criminal case filed against Shant Harutyunyan will have, Sakunts responded, “This is one of the cases which depends on public participation, if we leave the resolution of this case to the legal system, then Shant will be convicted, and it will be illegal”, noted Sakunts.
To the question what role Baghramyan 26 plays in this case, Artur Sakunts replied, “It is directly linked to it, the president’s palace has direct participation and a crucial role in cases of such political significance, and talking of any justice here it is simply meaningless”, concluded Artur Sakunts.”
